Khanjar Dagger

  • Dated: 18th century
  • Culture: Mughal
  • Place of Origin: India
  • Measurements: overall length: 15.5in (369mm). Blade length: 10in (254mm)

The highly polished and precisely formed hilt is of a milky coloured Agate. Set on either side of the upper side of the handle is a gold bezel with a stone (in kundan style – kundan keshri is a traditional form of Indian gemstone jewellery involving a gem set with gold foil between the stones and its mount) one side with a red stone (probably ruby) and the other a cabochon of a more purple colour.

The blade is very fine, forged from high quality and high contrast Wootz Damascus steel, nicely ground fullers, and a polished edge. It has a slightly swollen tip. There is thick gold koftagri decoration to the forte, where there blade is sandwiched between two pieces of steel in order to provide strength to the blade where it joins the hilt.
